This open scoop spoon put us in mind of the majestic Sperm Whale with its wide round body and mouth with the shorter tail and its natural curves.
Each piece of wood lends itself to a particular shape. Because of the wood grains and the shape of the beginning piece. Its wide bowl will allow you to take heaping scoops so it would serve well as a coffee scoop or for your loose leaf tea blends. It would be great as a spice or salt spoon. Use it for baking as it measures true.
This spoon holds a full tablespoon when level.
Manzanita is an incredibly hard wood so carving and sanding take quite a bit of time and elbow grease. It is an incredible wood and well worth the effort.

The Story of This Piece:
Manzanita (Arctostaphylos manzanita) is a large shrub native to California. The way it grows is beautiful, the bark is smooth and red, the branches twist and curve as they grow, creating beautiful natural shapes. This piece demonstrates the natural shape of the manzanita tree, curved, soft and smooth. This was pulled from an old family ranch. These manzanita lived long lives, and grew until they died of old age. It's called The Manzanita Grave Yard. This was carved from wood pulled for such a purpose.
Care Instructions:
We've finished this piece with our bees wax and food grade mineral oil wood conditioner for longer life.
Don't let wood soak in water.
Never use harsh scouring pads.
Hand-wash only with warm water and gentle dish soap
